Sahara dust in the air can make the sky look yellowish to brownish.
Sahara dust reaches Austria almost every year. But what dangers does it pose, and how does the desert sand make it to Central Europe?
Sahara dust comes from the Sahara, the largest desert in the world, which extends over large parts of North Africa. Wind and hurricanes stir up the sand and dust in the Sahara, and it enters the atmosphere. It is transported there by strong winds across the Atlantic and to other parts of the world.
The Saharan dust arriving in Austria consists of fine dust. However, compared to industrial particles from combustion processes, such as car exhaust and smoke from chimneys, the mineral particles from Saharan dust are less dangerous to our health.
